An 'Online Database' is simply a collection of data and implies the tools/software to interact with that data (adding new data or retrieving stored data based on a set of parameters). This is typically done using Forms (input) and Reports (output). The 'Online' part means that it is stored/housed off-site.

E-commerce, on the other hand is a method to sell merchandise and intellectual properties 'Online' apart from a traditional 'Brick and Mortar' physical store. E-commerce software must be able to handle the transfer of funds from the customer in exchange for the transfer of materials (physical or intellectual). In most cases E-commerce sites will use an online database which stores all it's products for sale (inventory) and a record of all sales (orders).

Statistics: Posted by dleffler
